Unit 7.1: Bold Actions part 1 (August 21st-September 1st)
Bold Actions introduces students to real and imagined subjects who took chances in life to reach for their dreams and broke down barriers for others in the process. Students will read Women in Aviation, an essay outlining the achievements of female pilots Bessie Coleman and Harriet Quimby, and the short story Big Things Come in Small Packages as their independent reading task. Students will write a research report on a chosen "Pioneer" who they feel broke down barriers and improved life for others with their bold actions. Students wil research and tell about who the individual is, what bold action they took, and explain how that action improved life for a particular section of society. Students will enjoy the creative challenge of aviation by learning how to build different styles of paper airplanes and create and develop a final product to participate in our air show at the end of the unit.

Students will continue their understanding of the theme of Bold Actions by reading The Flight of Icarus, a Greek myth that warns of the dangers that can occur if we are too bold our actions. They will also read the poem Icarus' Flight to explore different perspectives on whether someone can be too bold in their actions. Students will complete the development of their Pioneer essay (due 9/23) and also write a Myth or Fable that teaches the theme of standing up for yourself or the dangers of taking too great a risk (due 9/30). Students will study critical vocabulary and develop understanding of how the suffixes -ty and -ity can impact the meaning of words. In addition, students will learn about comma usage and coordinate adjectives, to help them understand when and when not to use commas between adjectives in descriptive writing. Finally, students will create an oral presentation about the Pioneer they selected to research and write about during this Unit.
